The RCAF provides the Canadian Forces with relevant, responsive, and effective airpower to meet the defense challenges of today and into the future. A critical component of this commitment lies in prioritizing new technologies and incorporating new approaches to innovation.
The Royal Canadian Air Force Air Warfare Center (RCAF AWC) Innovation Lab located in Kitchener-Waterloo, helps individuals across the organization identify innovation and experimentation programming opportunities. The Innovation Lab, called Flight Deck, is located in Communitech and helps develop projects to leverage technologies to improve the operation of the RCAF.
How Will I Make An Impact?
The Department of National Defence (DND) is seeking to engage a Machine Learning Specialist to support the RCAF AWC Innovation Lab.
The successful applicant will provide advice and lead activities to define opportunities for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in RCAF operations. This person will support existing and new ML/AI activities, identify barriers to operational implementation within the RCAF, and make recommendations on the core AI practices and strategy required to realize the full benefit of the emerging Technology.

The successful candidate will be passionate about contemporary and emerging defense trends and challenges and understand how they can be applied to advance international peace and security. They will have strong communication skills and an understanding of product management, and the ability to move ideas from conception to technical application.
The ML specialist will be excited to guide machine learning projects specific to the needs and priorities of the RCAF while managing the balance of scale, performance, and cost appropriate to the project. They will be an active participant in brainstorming sessions with the Lab Director, Tech Lead, Co-op Students, and RCAF personnel, seeking to generate new ideas, identify problems, and facilitate opportunities for innovation.
Do I Have What It Takes? (Requirements)
You have a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent from a Canadian university.
You have 3+ years of applying practical ML algorithms and libraries to business problems.
You’re knowledgeable on standard machine learning libraries and have experience applying them.
You’re experienced in using developing AI/ML software. (Python, C++, Lisp.)
You’ve had practical experience sourcing and managing data sets used in the production of ML/AI models.
It would be a huge plus if you also had experience with working with military projects including Air Operations, Radar/imagery enhancement, or developing network architecture.
