Their products (Casper, Snapshot, and Duet) help higher education institutions to look beyond book smarts, seeing a clearer, more holistic view of applicants. It’s used by 360+ academic partners in Canada, US, Australia (and growing!) with 150,000+ applicants taking the test each year, and covers 90% of all US medical school applicants. They also host the Admissions Summit, an annual 2-day conference, and power the Alo Grant, an annual $100,000 research fund.

How Will I Make An Impact?


Altus is looking for an experienced technology leader who has a genuine interest in creating a world served by exceptional professionals. This is a leadership role overseeing the engineering team. As the Director of Engineering, you will help to define and execute a well-thought-out software development technology and people strategy to support their growth. 


You will mentor and motivate two software development teams made up of ten talented engineers, and support non-organic growth opportunities. You will contribute to building a fantastic engineering culture - challenging your team, growing their skills, and having fun while doing it. This is an opportunity to provide Altus’ existing customers with additional complementary products that help meet their institutional goals of producing the best professionals possible.


This is a full-time position based in Canada and reports to VP of Technology, Tobin Edwards. Altus is a remote-first company that returned to a limited office presence in Toronto and co-working space opportunities outside the GTA in January 2022 to accommodate employees that want or need an office or a hybrid option.

Our Ideal  Candidate Looks Like:

  • You have 5+ years of experience leading high-performance engineering teams in a fast-paced, high-growth environment

  • You’ve launched and scaled commercially successful products - ideally platform products going through 10x growth in your tenure using JavaScript and cloud infrastructure

  • You have experience executing a strategic vision for an engineering team in a SaaS environment and are interested or curious about Edtech 

  • You have a demonstrated ability to coach and mentor, coaching and motivating your team to achieve more than they could have on their own

  • You have a strong executive presence, influential leadership style and are comfortable being direct and succinct in communication

  • You have deep technical domain expertise and passion for modern tech stacks (like MEAN/MERN), high-reliability cloud software development products and processes (deployment, logging, unit testing, load balancing, autoscaling, load testing), and geographic isolation of products/data etc.

What's the Process?

Altus Assessments is hyper-focused on delivering a positive candidate experience. The general hiring process looks like the following:


Meet Tobin, VP of Engineering: You’ll meet with Tobin Edwards for an introductory phone call.


Meet the Team: You'll meet with 2-4 members of the Altus team over a video call. 

They will assess your technical skills, values alignment, and how you might contribute to their culture. Before this interview, you may complete an assignment that closely mirrors some aspects of the role and present your work to the team. (Time allocation: up to 3 hours)


Reference Checks: Altus will ask for 2-3 professional references to chat about your time working together.


Final Decision: The hiring manager will consolidate all of the feedback and let you know of their decision (there may be a quick additional call at this stage to help them make a decision)


Offer: If you are Altus’ perfect match, and you’re theirs, an official offer will be made!
